Mark Kappes Grabs Early Lead at PING Ontario PGA Class ‘A’ Championship

(Minett, Ont., September 14, 2009) – In what could best be described as a battle of attrition Mark Kappes (Texas Road) came out on top on the first day of the Ontario PGA Class ‘A’ Championship at The Rock Golf Club. Coupled with windy conditions, fast greens and narrow fairways The Rock Golf Club proved to be a stern test for many of the players. Kappes’ round of 1-under-par was good enough for a two stroke lead over Ken Tarling (Ken Tarling’s Golf Academy) heading into the final round beginning at 8AM tomorrow.

“It went very well for me today,” said Kappes who hit 12 of 13 fairways. “I really like this course and it rewards accurate shots, which is good for me,” added Kappes who made four birdies on his round.

With a win here Kappes would earn a spot on the Ontario team which will compete in the Ontario / Quebec Matches next month at Mississaugua Golf & Country Club.

“That is the sole reason I came here,” said Kappes when asked about Ontario / Quebec Matches. “I missed the cut in Barrie (Ontario PGA Championship) and I knew if I came here and played well I could get on the team,” added Kappes who has played on the team for the last three years.

Defending champion Billy Walsh (Beacon Hall) shot 3-over-par 74 to match his opening round from a year ago. That might be a good thing for Walsh who bounced back last year with a course record 7-under-par 64. That round of 64 might be tough to achieve this year as the conditions are much firmer and faster.

Dave Wettlaufer (Deer Ridge) and Dan Clark (Golden Ridge) are three shots off the lead after firing matching 73’s. Keir Smith (The National), John Rushnell (Black Diamond), Ron Kenesky (Hidden Lake) are all tied with Walsh and sit in a tied for fifth. Danny King (Magna), Gary Jeffrey (Brooklea), Dan Greenwood (Heron Point), Ian Doig (Ian Doig Golf Academy) and Brian French (Mad River) all shot 75 to sit in a tie for ninth spot.
