Round 4 Update – Round 5 Preview

(Pickering, Ont., August 26, 2009) – Ken Tarling (Ken Tarling’s Golf Academy) continues to be the player to beat in this year’s Ontario PGA Match Play Championship. Tarling defeated Danny King (Academy Tee at Magna) 4 & 3 in their match earlier this month at Maple Downs.

“Unfortunately Danny wasn’t at his best on the day we played,” said Tarling, who lost in the match play finals in 2008 to Lynden D’Aloisio (Magna). “Obviously you want to play the other guy when they are on top of their game and we all know Danny is a tremendous player so on one hand it’s disappointing but on the other hand I won and I can’t wait to play my next opponent,” added Tarling who is having a breakthrough year on the golf course.

Tarling’s opponent will be 2007 match play champion Andy Holborn (Coppinwood) who defeated Billy Walsh Jr. at Eagle’s Next 1 up.

“Billy and I had an up and down match and it came down to the 18th hole,” said Holborn after his victory. “It will be fun to play against Kenny, he’s a great player and although he isn’t the longest hitter he is probably the best grinder in our Association.”

One of the biggest upsets in the fourth round came when J.P. Bedard (International CC) defeated Ontario PGA Assistants’ Champion Dave Levesque (Rattlesnake Point). The upset was stunning considering Levesque’s course record 61 at Pen Lakes just one week prior.

“Dave struggled a little bit right out of the gate and I was able to go 2 up,” said J.P. Bedard who has battled back problems lately which has hampered his ability to compete in more Ontario PGA events. “My wedge game was the real difference in the match and I was able to stay alive with some good shots,” added Bedard who now faces fellow Niagara area Professional, Colin Murray.

Ontario PGA Match Play rookie Gordie Burns (Golden Ridge) has continued to play well and knocked off Gary Boyce in the fourth round in the Ben Kern Bracket. Burns now faces 2003 Ontario PGA Match Play Champion Tom Jackson (Oslerbrook) who defeated Greg Colekessian (Georgian Bay Club).

In the Al Balding bracket Eddie Maunder (Deerfield) continues to have a hot hand. Maunder recently won on the Great Lakes Tour and defeated Piero Poletto (Country Club) in the fourth round of the Ontario PGA Match Play. Maunder will now face Brian Hadley, (Huron Oaks) who knocked off Jim Kenesky (Lowville), to see who advances to the final four.

Players have until September 11, 2009 to complete their fifth round matches. All winners will earn the right to compete in the final at The National Golf Club of Canada on September 18, 2009.
