Mark Kappes Hangs on To Win PING Ontario PGA
Class ‘A’ Championship presented by ECCO Shoes in a Playoff

(Minnet, Ont., September 15, 2009) – Mark Kappes (Texas Road) managed to hang on and win the 2009 Ontario PGA Class ‘A’ Championship in a playoff over Dave Wettlaufer (Deer Ridge) and Ron Kenesky (Hidden Lake). Kappes’ par on the second playoff hole was good enough to secure his first Ontario PGA tournament win as well as a spot on the Ontario Team for next month’s Ontario / Quebec Matches.

“This is an awesome feeling,” said Kappes “To know that I have qualified for the team, received an exemption into the CPC and won my first Ontario PGA event all in one outing is pretty awesome,” added Kappes 49, of Windsor.

This was the second year in a row the Class ‘A’ was held at The Rock and the first time in the history of the event a playoff has been used to decide who would take home the Al Balding trophy. For Wettlaufer the playoff was a welcome surprise.

“I didn’t even know I was in contention,” said Wettlaufer after posting 74 on his round. “It made my round a little less stressful but obviously I would have liked to have won,”

Although The Rock played almost two shots easier today the word easy and The Rock are not synonymous. Today, players battled cool and windy conditions through out the day. The scoring average today was 78.06 while yesterday it was 80.62 and winning total was 5-over-par 147.

Other notable finishes from The Rock saw Scott Bogle (King Valley), Bruce Rogerson (Brantford) and Ken Tarling finish in a tie for fourth at 150.  Defending Champion Billy Walsh was unable to match his course record 64 like last year and finished the tournament at 151 good enough for a share of seventh spot.
