Team Ontario Leads Titleist Cup after Day 1 at Mount Bruno

12/8/2008

(St. Bruno, QC., October 2, 2008) - Team Ontario will take a one point lead into the final round of the 2008 Titleist Cup after putting up a strong fight in the afternoon foursome matches. The Ontario team lead by Captain Tim McCutcheon fought back after finishing the morning one shot behind the Quebec Team.
"Our guys showed a lot of character today," said McCutcheon. "Our goal was to come here and play well and that's what we've done today," added McCutcheon who has played on his fair share of cup teams through out the years. "Anything can happen in Match Play and I'm confident our players will play as well tomorrow as they did today."
For Ontario it's an uphill battle going into tomorrow even though the team has the lead. Ontario hasn't won the Titleist Cup Matches in over 14 years and the last team to do it was in 1993 at Beacon Hall in Ontario. Coincidently Beacon Hall and Mount Bruno have their own rivalry contesting an interclub every year and Beacon Hall was victorious this past summer.
Coming into the matches Quebec was the favourite for a number of reasons. Mount Bruno has very tricky greens, often breaking in the opposite direction to what the players see and their players have had the chance to play Bruno as guests on a number of occasions. Therefore Quebec Captain Yves Tremblay is confident his team can rise to the occasion.
"It could have gone either way today," said Tremblay, a former Canadian PGA Assistants' Champion. "It's all about the putts around here and our guys putted well today they just didn't drop, hopefully tomorrow will be a different story."
Tee times for tomorrow have been pushed back due to overnight lows that are expected to reach 3°. Instead players will play from both tees beginning at 9:15.
