Ciesielski wins Match Play Championship for the second time!

The Match Play Semi-Finals and Championship were held at Beacon Hall Golf Club on Thursday September 22nd.

Throughout the season, our professionals played in the exciting elimination format, from a round of 32 to have a chance to win the title.

The Semi-Final matches were played back to back with Victor Ciesielski defeating Jakob Montemurro 4 & 3 and Branson Ferrier with a 1-up victory over Gord Burns, setting up a great final between Ciesielski and Ferrier.

With heavy winds and temperatures hovering below 10 degrees celcius, it was Ciesielski jumping off to a quick start, holding off Ferrier to capture the Championship for the second time in his career (2019).

“I know it’s cliché but one shot at a time”, said Ciesielski when asked about his key to success. “This golf course is so challenging and especially with the weather conditions, you just grind and see what it gives you”.

The quick start proved the difference as Ciesielski used his short game to par five straight holes.

“Branson is a pretty strong competitor, just want to hit quality shots and in Match Play you just want to get it inside of him and have the advantage any chance you get.”

“It was tough, I didn’t strike it good enough in these conditions”, said Ferrier. “With the wind blowing, it was hard to keep you balanced so getting comfortable with your shots was a little difficult”.

GORGEOUS HOST FACILITY

The event was held at Beacon Hall Golf Club in Aurora and like in many previous seasons it never fails to disappoint.

“Everytime you play this course it’s an 11/10”, said Ciesielski.

“It’s spectacular, it’s a such a treat to come here. Thank you to everyone at Beacon Hall for continuing to support the PGA of Ontario and having us out here because it’s a real honour to play this place”.

Ciesielski played with a heavy heart after the tragic loss of his colleague and fellow PGA of Ontario Member, Brian Jolley, General Manager of Galt Country Club. The champion fought through his emotions to capture the victory.

“A lot of emotions these last few days for sure” said Ciesielski. “He was a good friend. We're just sending a lot of love back to the GCC and this one is for you Jolls”, said the humbled Champion.

In the consolation match Jakob Montemurro defeated Gord Burns 2 & 1.
