Bruce was a very active, athletic young boy. He was an excellent soccer player and a superb hockey player who went on to play in the MTHL. His hockey prowess was thanks to his skating skills, which he learned on the backyard rink his father created every winter and which he honed at the Unionville Skating Club. It wasn’t, however, until his later teen years that he found his true life’s passion and love, when he was introduced to the world of golf by Robert (Bob) Ure, the golf professional at Donalda Golf Club. Bruce started as a caddy and worked his way up to being an assistant golf professional, under Bob’s mentorship.
In the winter of 1980 Bruce and his friend Bill Morrison played in the Space Coast Mini Tour out of Orlando, Florida. In 1981 Bruce moved to Vancouver after gaining his Class "A" Professional certificate and became the associate professional at Point Grey Golf Club where he made many colleagues and friends in the golf world. In 1985, he moved back to Toronto as the head golf professional at the Dentonia Golf Club bringing his friend, Dale Pederson, with him as an assistant pro and where Bruce continued to hone his golf management and teaching skills. His final professional job was at the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course which was a true full circle homecoming as this was the course he had lived across from during his childhood and where he would search the ditches of Kennedy Road for lost balls to sell back to the players at the next tee.
After his life as a golf professional, Bruce went to work for Matcom Industrial Installations where he was able to put his skills and knowledge of operational excellence and mentorship to work to benefit the organization operations and field personnel. He ended his 25 plus years career there as the head of the machinery moving division and the warehouse.
However, Bruce never gave up his golf passion continuing to play in the PGA of Canada Seniors circuit ranking 26th in the Champion tournament in 2010. As a member of Beacon Hall Golf Club, Bruce racked up several club senior championships and, once again, was able to connect with colleagues and made many more good friends in the golfing world.
Bruce was an incredible mentor and golf teacher to any who would listen. He was selfless in his time, skills, and knowledge to help strangers on the golf course. From walking up and fixing their grip, to giving tips and tricks to neighbours for their weekly matches and just wanting those around him to love golf and be as passionate for Canadian sports as he was. Bruce always had a good golf story to tell and enjoyed a good time talking sports of any genre with those who would engage. He loved his Sunday afternoons with son Brent and his friends watching the NFL, and his criticism of TFC in discussions with his niece Emma.
Bruce was pre-deceased by his parents, Norman and Kathleen Bundy. He will be sorely missed by his wife Sandy-Christine (nee Kajaks), his sons Brent (Cassandra Clayman) and Michael, his sister Kathryn O’Dwyer (nee Bundy) and his niece, Emma O’Dwyer, his nephew Brendan O’Dwyer, great-nephew Zayne O’Dwyer and all his Bundy cousins as well as the numerous golfing friends, workmates and people he befriended during his life’s journey.
The family would like to thank the medical staff at Toronto Western Hospital for their care and empathy during the last days of Bruce’s life.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. Please visit Thompson Funeral Home for updates.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to The Phil Hardy Beacon Hall Foundation or The Aurora Sports Hall of Fame in Bruce’s memory.
